Everyone in this world needs purpose to be sane. We search for thing that give our life value and direction. People look to the world, others, or God. Your character changes and progresses as you find your purpose. The only problem is who we hold our purpose up to. Is it on a rock or sinking sand?
A lot of people find their purpose in vocation. What they do at work is what makes their life valuable. What if you become permanently disabled? Your purpose becomes permanently destroyed. Love of your job changes. One day you may hate work. Another day you get a promotion and it becomes valuable again. Unfortunately, vocation is not a solid foundation. If you depend on vocation for purpose it will eventually let you down.
Purpose is also found in family. Family is an important thing to maintain in your life. The connection and love you find in family helps you endure life and strengthen the world. Family doesn’t give you hope beyond this life. People are sinners. Family will let you down as well as any person you know in this world. You have a duty to your family but they are not perfect. They can’t guide your life to what God wants for you. God doesn’t let you down.
People find purpose by living a righteous life. Doing good works for others is what we are called to do. Again, like in the last paragraph, we are all sinners. We will let ourselves down. Living a righteous life is impossible to do. Christ is our only help. Being righteous in our own eyes is living an empty life. Base righteousness on Christ. He doesn’t let us down.
There is a common theme throughout this post. To find purpose we need to go to Christ. We cannot find purpose on our own. Living buy his concrete word leads us to purpose. Without him we are walking this life aimlessly, in search for things that cannot stand the test of perfection. God’s word stands the test to perfection. So, where do we go to find purpose?
