Everyday on social media there is a new cause to fight against. We have a new topic to be outraged against. Being part of these causes is a failed attempt to be part of something greater then yourself. Why are we always drawn to these causes? Many times, these discussions lead into chaos. Is there a positive result in sight? We are losing sight of what really matters. Our causes need to stem from God. God is perfect. If our ideas reflect the light of God, then those ideas are perfect.
When we search for causes we are not searching for God. We always have a need to search for something bigger then ourselves. There is an emptiness inside of us when we don’t have meaning in our lives. If God is not our Life, then we will be constantly searching for things that give us meaning. Not a single ideal can fulfil us. This truth is why we move to another cause. After this we move to another ideal. It never stops because nothing can fulfil us like God can. This is better explained in this passage in John.
John 4:13-14 (NASB):
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.’”
Many people reject that Jesus is enough for us. What people do is turn their ideal or cause into a righteous one. Ironically there is a desire to change your belief into a moral belief. An example for humor’s sake is that everyone has a right to a free morning donut. You then start protesting the local bakery for a free donut. The mental Olympics begins to start. Donuts make you happy cause they taste good. After that statement the logical toilet can begin. Since everyone is happy with a donut in their tummy then not giving them a free donut is taking away someone’s happiness. Therefore, a cause is created. Does this logic create problems? Yes, of course. A Straw-man is created, and stupid rage begins to degrade our culture.
Romans 12:1-2 (NASB):
“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
We need to put our lives in the hands of God. If we don’t we will pursue causes that are not righteous in His sight. When our actions and desires are in service to God then our cause will be righteous. It won’t be this endless cycle of fake righteousness. Discernment comes from complete devotion to God. The pursuit of ideas without the truth of God leaves us intellectually empty. Jesus is the idea we thirst for. Only He can end that thirst.
