Does God Owe Us?

Life unfortunately is very hard. Every day we find a new struggle just as fast as we conquer one. Should we demand God to owe us a more pleasurable life? Have we given enough of our life to His ends? If he loves us would he want us to not deal pain and suffering? If God is love why does he allow hate to spread all over the world? These questions are very selfish. In this blog I will explain why these questions are illogical and self-serving. I will start with a passage in scripture that explains what God has done for us.

Colossians 1:13-17 (NASB)

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Isn’t this enough? There are various passages thru the bible that magnify his love for us. He gave us the bible because he loved us. We escaped hell because of the debt that Jesus paid for us. It is very odd to say to God this is not enough. Is the greatest form of love giving up your life for someone else? Anyone who wants more then this is selfish. The reason why I included verse 16 and 17 was to explain the magnitude of God. This is very important.

The last part of the passage states “…all things have been created through Him and for Him.” He died for his creation.  We ask more from the One that everything is created for? I was originally going to make a longer blog. Yet the answer is already self-evident. We owe everything to him. Everything we have is not enough for him. He is more then enough for us.

This is so very true. Most “American” Christian’s have an entitled view of what their relationship with Jesus means. If He did nothing but die for us, that would be more than enough to demand a lifetime of service. But to know the reasons why it is enough you also have to understand what that death did. Well, more specifically, when he defeated death by rising 3 days later. This paid our debt, and that debt was death. And that is a payment we will never be able to repay. He owes us NOTHING, and deserves EVERYTHING from us.

John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” He did pay the ultimate price for us. He took our sin, when he was without any sin. What is amazing is we can call him our savior and friend. Some people think I’ll serve God if he will do this for me. When it doesn’t happen, they are angry. He never promises our life will be trouble free. We serve him in any circumstance. This world isn’t our permanent residence, and he made that happen for us, who don’t deserve it.
